Rarely ever does a movie manage to balance the quirky wit and smartness, with genuine characters. Much thanks to future superstar Ellen Page, is Juno the exception every such movie is searching to be. The 16 year old pregnant girl portrayed so real with both maturity and the in-maturity she most definitely still posses.
It's a comedy not afraid to be taken too seriously or even not serious at all, with witty dialogue, a lot of heart and it balances perfectly on the right strings throughout the movie. How often does it come natural to read the main characters "Hey Bleek! Spank off to this with motion lotion. Just kidding! (sort of) Your Best Friend, Juno" inscription next to her picture in the boy's yearbook, and it makes perfect sense to her character?
Much of the charm extended through this movie is thanks to the tone kept with Kimya Dawson's music. It's like the movie was created in the same spirit as her songs, and it's most definitely a match made in heaven. Quirky and witty, and I find myself unable to stop smiling quite often during it's hour and a half.
Even better. The movie never tries to be a cautionary tale about our cautionary whale. It's not about moral, abortion, teen pregnancy or any other important subject. It's mostly just a pearl shining to entertain, and it does so very close to perfection.
