Every man is an island, and so was Hugh Grant as the lead character in About a Boy as well until he got himself into a young boys life. Based on a best selling novel by Nick Hornby, also responsible for High Fidelity and Fever Pitch.
As a movie this doesn't come close to High Fidelity, which I think is the best movie based on a Hornby novel. It doesn't really manage to stand out from the usual mainstream work Hollywood spends most of their money on, unlike High Fidelity which managed to balance the monologue humor with good dialogue and a better story.
It still got enough of the Hornby touch within it to save it from disaster, but if you're only gonna see one movie based on a Hornby novel, I wouldn't choose this.
